London Museums and Galleries![]() You know the thing about London is that we are totally blessed here in so many ways - one of them is the number and quality of our museums and galleries. Totally spoiled for choice, I've had to select my three favourites to represent Traditional London. So here is the best of the best!! British Museum, rightly famous around the entire world, the British Museum is huge and has diverse collections, as far as history and ancient history goes, no matter where your interest lies, then the British Museum more than likely has better items and exhibits than anywhere else. Highlights include the Ancient Egyptian Galleries, the infamous Elgin Marbles (freize from the Parthenon in Athens) and the Medieval Europe Galleries, where my mother who is a volunteer guide gives her tour!! National Portrait Gallery, this is my favourite gallery in London, you know how sometimes, someplaces are just too overloaded with art? Well if so, this is the place for you!! Just the right size to know you've had a dose of culture and not to big so you're totally exhausted by the end of it!! Lots of human interest given that they are all portraits, whatever the official title I consider this to be two galleries, upstairs; the traditional portraits, royalty, historical figures and so on; downstairs the modern era, with loads of people you'll recognise. Victoria and Albert Museum, also known to Londoners as the V&A, this is a vast building in Kensington, which funnily enough has a very broad series of Collections related to Art and Design, I think it is probably most famous for the fashion and textile collections - if you have kids then there is a childhood section that is rather interesting. next ... essential Historic London useful pages: useful references (other wesites): |
